¶ The Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol
If, for example, the network name of the user's computer is pc.department.branch.example.com, the browser will try the following URLs in turn until it finds a proxy configuration file within the domain of the client:
http://wpad.department.branch.example.com/wpad.dathttp://wpad.branch.example.com/wpad.dathttp://wpad.example.com/wpad.dathttp://wpad.com/wpad.dat
As you can see the “wpad” computer name is a specific record.
That’s why, for Microsoft, this record is banned to avoid mistakes.
¶ Add WPAD Record Into Microsoft DNS
- On the Microsoft DNS server run a CMD as administrator and type:
dnscmd /info /globalqueryblocklist
- If wpad appears in the response, you should run the command:
dnscmd /config /enableglobalqueryblocklist 0 - Run the DNS configurator by typing “dnsmgmt.msc”
- Add a new Host (A or AAAA)
- In the name, type “wpad”
- Point the ip address to the Artica server that stores the Proxy PAC service.
