OpenDNS was founded in 2006 with the mission to provide a safer, faster, and better internet browsing experience for all users. Initially, OpenDNS provided a recursive DNS service for use at home, and in 2009 introduced a service for the enterprise market. In 2012, OpenDNS launched an enterprise security product, called Umbrella. Its rapid success and customer adoption led to OpenDNS being acquired by Cisco in 2015.
This feature is added in DNS Firewall in v4.40 Service Pack 34
This object will turn automatically the use of OpenDNS DNS servers using the DNS Over HTTPs protocol.
The DNS Firewall service must have access to 443 port in “direct mode”.
The HTTP Proxy support is not currently supported.

- Using OpenDNS with DNS Firewall is very simple.
- Create a new DNS Firewall rule
- Add a new object and click on the choose button
- In the table search the entry “
opendns” - You can choose one of 2 objects OpenDNS and OpenDNS family.
- Object is added inside your rule, you can now specify sources that will use OpenDNS DNS resolver backend. ( in our case, we have choosen the group “all”
- Add the rule to the end in order to force the DNS Firewall to use it at the last.
