The transparent method is used in specific scenarios where you want the DNS service to act as a pass-through resolver for certain domains, forwarding queries to upstream DNS servers without modifying or caching the responses locally.
This approach is particularly useful when you need to maintain the original DNS resolution path while still leveraging DNS’s capabilities for other domains
This means:
- The DNS service does not serve any local data for that domain.
- Queries for the domain are forwarded to upstream servers (e.g., forwarders or root servers) as if DNS were not involved in the resolution process for that zone.
- It overrides any forward zone rules or other local configurations for the same zone, ensuring the query is sent upstream.
¶ When to Use the transparent Method
- Bypass Local Overrides:
Use transparent when you want to ensure that a domain’s resolution is not influenced by local forward zone rules, or other custom configurations.
For example, if you’ve set up redirects for most domains but need a specific domain to resolve normally via upstream servers.
- Testing or Debugging:
During testing or troubleshooting, transparent allows you to temporarily bypass DNS service’s local handling to verify how a domain resolves with upstream DNS servers (e.g., to check if an issue is due to local configuration).
- Dynamic or External Domains:
If a domain’s DNS records are managed externally (e.g., by a third-party provider) and you don’t want DNS server to cache or modify responses, transparent ensures queries are passed through without local interference.
- Split DNS or Multi-Tenant Environments:
In environments where some domains should resolve differently based on the client or network (e.g., internal vs. external resolution), transparent can be used to defer to the upstream resolver for certain domains, avoiding conflicts with local policies.
- Avoiding Cache Pollution:
If a domain has frequently changing records and you don’t want DNS service to cache potentially stale data, transparent prevents local caching by passing queries upstream each time.
¶ Set domain as transparent
- On the left menu, go to
DNS > DNS Cache Service > Forward zone - Click on the button Transparent and add the domain.
- Your domain will be stamped ad “transparent”
